What to Expect at Your Dental Cleaning
Your dental cleaning is a key component of your preventive dentistry plan.
At Generations Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, the office of Dr. Lindsay Compton – your dentist in Arvada, CO, we take preventive dental care seriously and make it the foundation of our practice.
For most patients, we recommend preventive cleanings twice a year (or every six months). This is usually sufficient to remove any plaque or tartar that has built up and prevent cavities and gum disease from developing. If you are prone to cavities or gum disease, however, we may recommend more frequent cleanings so we can stay on top of the problem.
But what exactly happens at a dental cleaning? If you’ve been putting off your cleaning out of fear or anxiety of the unknown, it might help to know what to expect.
Our talented and gentle hygienist, Joy, performs cleanings at Generations Family & Cosmetic Dentistry. She is careful, yet thorough, so you can have a comfortable, complete cleaning and go home with squeaky clean teeth!
When you arrive for your cleaning, we’ll take you back and make sure you are comfortable. Joy will check your teeth and gums for any concerning signs. We may take some digital images so we can show you exactly what we see and point out areas of concern. Education is an important part of your cleaning, and we’ve found that images can help us highlight areas you might be missing when you brush and floss so you can improve your home care routine.
A Flawless Finish
We’ll start your cleaning by removing built-up plaque and tartar. This is done with a combination of electric and manual tools. The ultrasonic scaler dislodges plaque and tartar, and Joy will carefully assess your teeth to remove any remaining traces by hand. If your teeth tend to be sensitive, let us know. We can apply numbing medication to help keep your cleaning comfortable.
Once your teeth are free from build-up, we’ll polish them to a shine. If Joy has noticed any areas of concern, she will notify Dr. Compton, who can assess you for cavities or gum disease and create a treatment plan, if necessary. We can also review your home care routine and provide any recommendations needed to make sure you are getting the most out of this important habit.
We’ll finish you up with a fluoride varnish to keep your enamel strong, and you’ll be good to go!
